Stance & violin Position

Learn how to stand, sit, and hold the violin. Great form and posture establish the foundation for beautiful playing.

You can center your weight equally on both feet, or you can shift your your weight entirely to your left foot. Your feet

should be about shoulder width apart. Your spine should be straight, whether you sit or stand. When you sit, use only the

edge of the chair. Keep both shoulders relaxed and level.

1-Stance & Violin Position: Should I Use a Shoulder Rest?

The distance between your collar bone and chin should be equal to the combined height of shoulder rest, violin, and chin rest.

The violin should stay horizontal by way of the relaxed weight of your head, without support from your left hand.

Find a way to hold your violin without raising your left shoulder. Measure the distance between your collar bone and your chin. It must be equal to the combined height of shoulder rest (if needed), violin, and chin rest. This measurement is different for each person, as are the solutions. The weight of your head should hold the violin in place without using your neck muscles to squeeze and without an extreme left turn of your neck. The violin should stay horizontal without the support of your left hand, otherwise it will have a negative effect on the ease of your shifts, especially during downward double stop passages.

3-Chin Rests and Body Sizes

Left-plated chin rests work better for players with longer arms.

Center-plated chin rests work better for players with shorter arms.

Your right arm must be able to easily pull a straight bow all the way to the tip. The right arm should not be fully extended at the tip, and the bow grip should not change between the frog and the tip. Players with long arms can afford to hold the violin further to the left. Chin rests with plates to the left of the tail piece work well for this position. Violinists with shorter arms have to hold the violin more in front of their bodies. They need to hold the violin higher on the shoulder to make the bow angle easier for the right arm. In this case, chin rests that are centered over the tail piece are more advantageous.

Changing Violin Sizes

4-Stance & Violin Position: Changing Violin Sizes

Violin size is correct when the child can easily reach around the scroll with a slightly bent arm.

It is better to use a size that is too small rather than one that is too large.

If the child can easily reach around the scroll with a slightly bent left arm, the violin size is correct. Technique is easier and safer to learn on small instruments. Err on the side of caution and move to larger violin sizes only when they are truly comfortable.

Straight Bow Geometry

In the middle of the bow, a square forms between sounding point, shoulder, elbow, and hand.

At the tip, a triangle occurs between shoulder, elbow, and hand.

At the frog, a different triangle appears between shoulder, elbow, and hand.

 Bow Grip

How to find the best hand motions, speeds, and amplitudes for the unique mood and character of each phrase.

Definition

Thumb: supports the bow, provides fulcrum

Middle Finger: closes the ring with the thumb to secure fulcrum

Index Finger: presses the bow down and controls sounding point

Ring Finger: controls Sounding Point

Little Finger: lifts bow pressure

Learn the function of each finger: The tip of the thumb supports the bow between the frog and the leather or winding. The middle finger rests opposite the thumb, the last joint touching the bow stick. The middle finger does not exert any pressure, it just secures the fulcrum with the thumb. The index finger touches the bow in the middle of the second phalanx. It has two functions: It can press the bow onto the string (you must counter that pressure with your thumb), and it can pull the bow towards the bridge to control sounding points. The ring finger touches the bow stick with the joint between the second and third phalanx. It controls the sounding point by pulling the bow toward the fingerboard. The thumb is always the fulcrum. The little finger stands on top of the bow stick. By pressing down, it can lift the bow off the string.

Exercises

Check your bow grip after each bar.

If your bow grip has changed, figure out on which note it changed.

Systematically increase the number of bars between checks.

Check your bow grip after each bar. If your bow grip has changed, find out on which note it changed. When you can keep the same bow grip with each bar, try two bars in a row, then four, then eight etc.

Keep the Same Bow Grip!

Left Hand

Finger Dropping and Lifting

Learn how to play with clean articulation and with a relaxed left hand!

Definition

Finger dropping has two functions:

  • Stop the old vibration
  • Establish the new pitch

Finger lifting has two options:
  • Lift straight up
  • Use left hand pizzicato for more articulation.
  • Finger dropping: Establish a new pitch. Stop the old vibration. Release any unnecessary finger pressure. Finger lifting: Establish a new pitch. Use pizzicato left hand for better articulation. To practice the pressure release, drop the finger onto the string with very high speed, and lift the finger immediately up to a harmonic. After practicing this a few times, lift the finger only to the minimum pressure you need to keep the string at the fingerboard. This is not visible to an observer, but you can remember this feeling. Use this technique always and in all your pieces. Your left hand will always stay relaxed!
